After the expulsion of the colonies and Kenya being declared as an independent state. It was the hopes and desire of the majority that a renewed era of governance characterized by the right to information and many promises the new government came up with.

This however did not come as soon as the media practitioners and journalist had hoped. Not much had changed even after fifteen years of self governance under President Jomo Kenyatta. The assuming of power by President Moi showed some light at the end of the tunnel for journalists, as far as freedom of press was concerned. They hoped that press freedom had taken a new positive turn. Sooner than later, liberating the press took place. This led to emergency of a number of privately owned television and F.M radio stations breaking the monopoly of the Kenya Broadcasting Station "KBC" this also saw the emergence of private newspapers and magazines. However despite the fact that guarantees for media freedom and freedom of expression are contained in the Kenyan constitution. The day's governments have always compromised this and systematically moved in the direction of censorship.
